NIH Commuter Information

​Depending on where you live, there may be many different ways to get to and from NIH. This page explores a variety of commuting options and lists resources available to NIH employees. ​​​​​​

​NIH Transhare Program
​The NIH Transhare Program provides a transit subsidy for use on mass-transit including MetroRail, MetroBus, RideOn (Montgomery County), The Bus (PGCounty), MTA Commuter Buses, MARC/VRE/DASH, and more.

To apply, complete  Form 2705-1 Transhare Program Application/Commuting Cost Declaration and submit via email to the NIH parking office or fax to 301-480-0854. The Parking Office, is in Building 31, Room 1A11, hours Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.

​NIH Rideshare
​To reduce the stress associated with the daily trip to and from work and to help ease traffic congestion, the NIH offers a free Carpool and Vanpool matching service. Participants can use these services to find temporary and permanent ride sharing options as well as benefit from perks such as reserved parking spaces on campus. ​
​NIH Transportation Listserv

​The NIH Transportation Listserv will enable subscribers to receive News and Updates to their e-mail accounts and Blackberries. News and updates will include:

  • Availabiltiy of parking spaces at major lots and garages on the NIH campus 

  • Status of Shuttles due to traffic weather etc. 

  • Information pertaining to NIH Commuter Information, NIH Transhare Program, Special Events, Road Closures and much much more​

​Electric Vehicle Pilot Program​
​Did you know about the Electronic Vehicle Pilot Program here at NIH? The pilot program allows NIH Commuters to ‘Plug In’ and ‘Power Up’ while they work.  NIH has installed 8 electric vehicle charging stations in 3 Multi-Level Parking (MLP) garages on the NIH Bethesda Campus. NIH Employees of electric vehicles can park and charge their vehicles at one of the following locations:
  • ACRF/Bldg. 10 Parking Garage: P2 Level and P3 Level

  • MLP-6: Lower Level

  • MLP-7: Lower Level

Biking Resources
The NIH Bicycle Commuter Club is an NIH R&W sponsored club that was founded to encourage commuting to NIH by bicycle and to represent the interests of bicyclists to the NIH administration.  
 
​NIH Shuttle Routes​
​Once you have made your way to NIH, you can take the free shuttle service around campus  or to off-campus locations.
