New Fitness Centers Open at Rockledge 2 and Building 53 (on-campus)

As we are returning to the physical workspace, the DATS Fitness and Wellbeing Program reminds everyone that May is National Physical Fitness and Sports Month. As the weather turns to spring, we encourage everyone to take a moment to focus on their physical well-being.

We are also happy to announce that the NIH fitness centers are open. On the main campus, we have opened the Building 53 functional training facility. This facility is not your average gym - the facility has been designed to emphasize functional, mobility and flexibility training, as well as primary exercise with free weights. If you are interested in learning how to increase your mobility and flexibility and learn how to work out with free weights, then this is the facility for you. The facility can accommodate beginners to expert lifters and all levels in-between. Depending on when you drop in, some of our trainers and our USA weightlifting coach may be in the facility and can offer some tips and advice.

For those of you who are off campus, we also have opened our newest fitness facility in Rockledge Two. Located on the second floor in the newly renovated Rockledge facility, the full-service fitness center includes strength and cardio machines, free weights and a group exercise room. This facility offers something for everyone for fitness at all levels. Shower and locker facilities are available 24 hours, 7 days a week to all occupants of the building, although lockers are for day use only.

If you are interested in a tour, just drop by the Building 53 fitness center, staffed Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 7:00 am - 4:00 pm. The Rockledge Fitness Center is staffed Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 8:00 am - 5:00 pm. Fitness centers are available for use by members only. After you join, you will be given 24-hour, secure badge access to both facilities. Get more information on memberships here. If you have any additional questions, contact Ms. Sherrell Freeman at

Note: the Building 31 Fitness Center is currently under renovation and will re-open in fall 2022.
