NIH to Host 3rd International Symposium to Advance Total Worker Health

The National Institutes of Health is proud to announce that it will be hosting the Third International Symposium to Advance Total Worker Health from October 11 to 14 at the Natcher Conference Center. This event will be held live, in hybrid, and 100% virtual formats.

The first and second international Symposiums to Advance Total Worker Health were held at NIH in 2014 and 2018. Because of Covid, the conference has been delayed until October 2022.

The International Symposium to Advance Total Worker Health sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is a public conference focused on advancing research, practice, policies, and programs aligned with the Total Worker Health approach. (NIOSH, 2022) The Symposium will bring together an audience of safety and health professionals, employers, researchers, policymakers, labor representatives, and members of the academic community. It will allow attendees to examine ways to make the workplace safer and improve the health and well-being of the global workforce. (NIOSH, 2022)

In 2018 the NIH, through the Office of Research Service and the Office of Human Resources became a member affiliate of the NIOSH Total Worker Health Affiliate Program. The mission of the Total Worker Health Affiliate Program is to advance worker health through non-funded collaborations, including labor, education, training, and research organizations.

The goals of the affiliate program include:

  • Increasing the visibility, adoption, and impact of TWH approaches to advance the safety, health, and well-being of workers through NIOSH assistance to Affiliates.
  • Attracting and assisting new collaborators to enrich and broaden TWH research and communication activities.
  • Collaborating to enrich and broaden TWH practice and outreach efforts.
  • Publicly recognizing the contributions of the Affiliate organizations to the development of TWH research and practice.

The Total Worker Health Program has assisted many of the programs within the OD working collectively to support the employee workforce. Oftentimes ORS partners including the Division of Amenities and Transportation Services, Work-life@NIH Program, the Division of Occupational Safety and Health, and the Office of Human Resources are working collaboratively, sharing resources, and engaging in communication and outreach to support the wellbeing of the NIH employees.
