Family Support

The NIH values family life. Learn more about the programs available to you and your family!

  • Back Up Care Program - offers access to back-up care when you need to be at work and your regular child or adult/elder care is unavailable.
  • Child Care Centers – provides space and support services to three licensed childcare centers in Montgomery County.
  • Parenting ListServ- request and share information about childcare and parenting issues with other NIH parents.
  • Parenting Coach - help navigate the stages of parenthood. Receive guidance on physical, social, mental, and emotional matters, within 48 hours. Email questions to nihparentingcoach@adventisthealthcare.com.
  • Lunch and Learn Seminars – cover parenting issues from infancy to the teenager years. Also covers dependent care issues from the emotional impact of caring for an adult dependent to legal issues.
  • Parental Leave - an overview of the resources available to employees for pregnancy, childbirth, adoption, surrogacy, and foster care purposes.
  • Nursing Mothers Program – provides prenatal breastfeeding education classes, telephone support with lactation consultants while on maternity leave, return to work consultation, and onsite lactation rooms.
  • Child Care Subsidy Program – offers tuition subsidy if your children are enrolled in licensed childcare programs and your total adjusted household income is below a certain amount.​

Caring for a Sick Child




​Offers NIH Federal employees access to child and adult/elder back-up care when they need to be at work and their regular care is unavailable. The NIH Community has access to the following back-up care programs:  center-based child care, in-home child care, in-home mildly ill child care, in-home adult/elder care, and self-care.  For more information about this program and how to register, click here.

The NIH community has free, unlimited access to a Work/life Specialist, who can help you assess your parent/caregiving role and support you by providing a range of resources and referrals for children and adults. This highly personalized professional service is available by calling
